waiting to be rescued
A slum is a densely populated area with very low standers of living. It is very strange that a place few km. from the fort seems like a different world, there is this straight line divides us and them. When we enter the slum it felt like we entered some other portal. Sights such as directly stagnant water, clogged drains, narrow lanes, cramped houses and heaps of garbage.
while going through the lanes
On talking to the inhabitants, they gathered to tell us their grievances’. The various types of problems they have been facing and how miserable their living conditions are

Shelter one of the biggest problem they talked about was of shelter, as monsoons are very Sevier their houses get flooded during this time. A family of 6 people lives in a cramped room.  The toilets were in a pathetic condition. Half of them had no doors and one with doors had no latches.

Drainage there is no proper underground sewage system. All the trash goes directly to the adjusant area were they live hence making the surrounding unhygienic and unsuitable for living.

Ventilation as the houses are made unevenly, there are no windows or even fans. When they cook food all the smokes gets filled in the room and as there are no windows, the smoke takes a lot of time to leave.

Lack of organized structure houses sprung from all the sides, there are no immediate facilities present in the area, even outside the latrine area weed has started to grow.

Cheaper materials used as they don’t have enough money to buy good quality stuff they settle buying the cheaper material which gets easily destroyed resulting in various mishaps.

how they live

People of the village have no permanent source of income, the money they get is on a daily serve bases and as their living conditions are they can fall ill any time and at that moment they won’t earn anything. Besides that the work they do is too hectic and tiring, they have to go to very far places to work. And it hasn’t brought any improvement in their lives. So, if the government or N.G.O. make an effort and conduct some programs to teach them various skills like handicrafts. It is a very inexpensive thing and can also fetch them a lot of money. It will also act as a boon for these people as by this they will not only get to learn new things but get to know new different things. As it has a great demand so there will be a constant inflow of cash. This type of world can be taken by within the families as a hereditary work. Even Hauz Khas has various handicraft shops so there people can also get jobs there only so that they would need to go far. And as they will go out there will develop a connection between the slims and the fort area.
